“Wetlands For Life”
Wetlands are highly sensitive and threatened ecosystems that include natural and artificial water bodies, such as lakes, rivers, marshes, deltas, tidal, peatlands, mangroves, rise-field and coastal areas. Despite the threats they face, wetlands provide drinking water, support biodiversity, enhance resilience to climate change, and sustain human societies.
Globally, wetlands are estimated to cover about 6 % of the Earth’s surface and are disappearing at a rate three times faster than forests. They are vital habitats for 40 % of all plant and animal species, and 1 in 8 people worldwide depends on them!
Attica Zoological Park supports the “Wetlands For Life” Campaign by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) for the protection and conservation of wetlands and the species that rely on them.
We took part in the Researchers’ Night together with high school students from our SLP program, actively engaging visitors in the campaign. In addition, we organized a research field trip with high school students from different countries around the world (GAIA Greece), focused on exploring the biodiversity of the Messolonghi lagoons.
To mark World Wetlands Day on February 2, 2026, we are organizing two competitions aimed at raising awareness and engagement:
