Day for the Reptiles of Greece: "Chameleon of Pylos"
Sunday, 1st March 2020, 12.00-16.00
"Until 1998, it was believed that there existed only one chameleon species in Europe, the Mediterranean chameleon Chameleo chamaeleon. In Greece, this species is found in Samos, Chios and Crete. However, photos of a large bodied chameleon in the hands of a person with great interest for reptiles and nature, emerged from the southwest Peloponnese and reached the German herpetologist Wolfgang Bohme who many years later realized that the chameleon in the Peloponnese belonged to a different species altogether... Today it is believed that the chameleons in the Peloponnese were introduced in ancient times from Alexandria, Egypt."
Who is the Chameleon of Pylos? Let's explore together this species and their fascinating family of arboreal lizards. Meet you at the Education Center!
